IN THE NEWS: Dad’s court bid to have son picked for school cricket team fails

In what we are sure were fairly amusing proceedings for all except the parties immediately involved, a KZN father failed this week to convince the High Court to force his son’s high school to select the son for the first cricket team. This is not surprising as, by the time judgment was handed down, the boy had already matriculated and left the school! The father’s argument was apparently based on the proverbial “race card”, as his son is Indian and apparently the majority of the players selected were white. However, the judge was unimpressed and found that no evidence had been led to support this argument. The judge also held that parents have no legal rights to meddle in the team selection processes of their children’s schools. Cricket South Africa reportedly welcomed the outcome, stating that the matter should never have reached court in the first place. While we have great sympathy for the aspiring cricketer in question for not making the cut, we admire and congratulate him for surviving the embarrassment and ridicule that he must have endured for the duration of this little drama and wish him all the best with his tertiary education, where we daresay he will not inform his father about the teams that he applies for!
